The Power to Parent series

The Neufeld Institute’s Power to Parent series equips parents with essential tools to nurture their children’s development. Part I: The Vital Connection focuses on building strong parent-child relationships, Part II: Helping Children Grow Up guides parents in fostering maturation, and Part III: Common Childhood Challenges addresses common parenting hurdles. Together, these courses provide a practical and insightful foundation for raising resilient and well-rounded children.

Courses in the 3-part Power to Parent series may be taken in any order. However, Dr. Neufeld recommends completing them in the original sequence, if possible. If taking the courses out of order, we recommend first viewing Relationship Matters for additional foundational context (see Free Resources).

POWER TO PARENT I: The Vital Connection

Part I of the Power to Parent series focuses on the child-adult relationship as the context for raising children - how this relationship is meant to develop, what can go wrong, why parents must matter more than peers, how to cultivate a context of connection, how to win back one's child if need be, and more. Attachment-safe and developmentally friendly discipline strategies are also introduced.

POWER TO PARENT II: Helping Children Grow Up

Part II of the Power to Parent series focuses on how to help children realize their potential as human beings. Since growing older is no guarantee of growing up, knowing how to foster maturation is key to raising children. The material is presented in such a way that engages parents while educating professionals as well.

POWER TO PARENT III: Common Childhood Challenges

Part III of the Power to Parent series focuses on the typical challenges of parenting. Every child gets stuck from time to time on the road to maturation. Dr. Neufeld equips parents to read the signs of a child in trouble, live with a sensitive child, cultivate resilience in a child, lead an alpha child, soften a defended child, discipline a stuck child, and more.

The Neufeld Intensive series

The Neufeld Institute’s Intensive courses provide a deep understanding of child development through the lens of attachment. Intensive I introduces the fundamentals of attachment and development, Intensive II explores the effects of separation on behavior, and Intensive III delves into the six stages of attachment. Together, these courses offer valuable insights for fostering healthy relationships with children.

NEUFELD INTENSIVE I: Making Sense of Kids

Not everyone grows up as they get older. The construct of psychological immaturity is not new, but only recently has developmental science advanced to the point where the idea of developmental arrest can be spelled out and employed as a powerful explanatory tool for problems in learning and behaving. Once kids are stuck, the usual ways of dealing with behaviour - including sanctions, consequences, and time-outs - actually make things worse. This flagship course, organized around the constructs of maturation and stuckness, provides a grounding in the conceptual foundations of Dr. Neufeld's formulation of the attachment-based developmental approach.

NEUFELD INTENSIVE II: The Separation Complex

Most problem behaviour is rooted in instinct and emotion and is therefore unresponsive to conventional forms of discipline or behaviour management. Building on the foundations of the Intensive I, this course sheds light upon the profound impact of separation on a child's personality and behavior, with special attention given to the problems of aggression, resistance, oppositionality, bullying, distractability, impulsiveness, anxiety, alarm problems, alpha problems, attachment problems, and more. When the developmental antecedents are understood, the path to effective intervention becomes clear.

NEUFELD INTENSIVE III: Becoming Attached

Intensive III: Becoming Attached unfolds and expands the six roots of attachment and puts the focus more on adults than in the first two levels. The course is also a journey through Dr. Neufeld's earlier theoretical development which created the puzzle pieces that ultimately came together in the six roots of attachment. The Intensive III is designed not only to provide deeper theoretical understanding but also to give the opportunity for more personal integration of the material.
